Surveillance cameras activated at Waiʻalae Beach Park bathhouse

Kāhala -- In a continuing effort to thwart illegal activity at park facilities, including vandalism, surveillance cameras have been installed and are now operational at Waiʻalae Beach Park.

Seven cameras are now posted around the park's bathhouse facility, outfitted with vandal-resistant enclosures. Combined with the digital storage, the cost of the equipment is just under $2,000.

Signs are placed around the bathhouse alerting park users of the surveillance camera use.

The installation of the cameras followed repeat cases of vandalism to the restroom sinks in February 2018, when five sinks were completely destroyed in back-to-back vandalism cases.

"We have always made the safety and security of park users and the facilities they enjoy a top priority" said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. "Cameras like these have been proven to work at other locations, and I urge the public to also be vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity to the Honolulu Police Department as soon as it is observed."

Surveillance cameras are part of many measures recently taken to secure and monitor our park facilities against illegal activity. Similar cameras have been installed at Ala Moana Regional Park, Kaiaka Bay Beach Park, Hans L'Orange Park and Sandy Beach Park (Wāwāmalu). A pilot project to secure closed park facilities using a contracted security company in select Urban Honolulu parks is currently being conducted.
