Innovative comfort station, new play apparatus opened at Pu‘u ‘o Hulu Community Park

MĀ‘ILI – An innovative comfort station and brand new play apparatus are now open to the public at Pu‘u ‘o Hulu Community Park located on Kaukama Road in Mā‘ili.

The bathroom facility consists of three individually secured restroom stalls which are family friendly and are available for use by all. One stall is accessible by persons with a disability.

The open breezeway design of this comfort station has proven to be safer against intruders, and is easier to maintain based on data from similar bathroom facilities in other parts of the country.

In addition, the comfort station features motion sensor lights, sky lights, split faced masonry block, and additional security gates.

Located between this comfort station and the park’s play courts is a new play apparatus installed as part of Mayor Caldwell’s Kākou for Parks Program.

This play apparatus represents the 21st new play apparatus installed under Kākou for Parks. The program has additionally resulted in improvements to 153 different parks around O‘ahu, including:

82 renovated comfort stations
302 resurfaced play courts
84 refurbished play apparatus
71 lined pickleball courts
The comfort station was completed at a cost of just over $1 million while the play apparatus, including the concrete pad and nearby rock wall, cost nearly $267,000.

A similar new play apparatus is being finalized at Kalākaua District Park at a cost of nearly $213,000.
